Abstract

There has been immense progress in our understanding of the genetic basis of Parkinson’s disease. The first inroads were made in the high penetrant Mendelian forms of the disease but in the last few years, Genome-wide association studies have continued the dissection of the genetic architecture.

What all of these genetic data mean for our understanding of Parkinson’s disease and its molecular pathogenesis remain to be elucidated.

In this talk I will present data on our current knowledge and also highlight where in my view the short-term future lies in terms of utilising these data for understanding the disease, identifying biomarkers, dissecting the gene environment interaction and one hopes pointing towards more rational therapeutic intervention.
